World's Largest Ice Cream Cake Guinness Record set by Dairy Queen

Today at noon, Dairy Queen Canada made history with its gigantic 10.13 tonne ice cream cake, setting a new Guinness World Record. With more than 20,000 pounds of ice cream, over 200 pounds of sponge cake, more than 300 pounds of icing and OREO crumble, the cake took 100 DQ experts 14 hours to complete.

The event was held to mark the 30th birthday of the chain's much-loved ice cream cake. The giant cake was assembled live in the Square, giving Torontonians and tourists the chance to witness history-in-the-making and enjoy a free slice of the iconic cake topped with OREO.

Dairy Queen beat the previous record for the world's largest ice cream cake, which was set in Beijing in 2006, by nearly 500 pounds. That cake weighed in at 17,637 pounds.

Patient ambassadors from The Hospital for Sick Children were on hand to collect donations that will go towards the hospital.
"After 30 years and 52 million cakes, we thought that building a 10-tonne cake would be a great challenge for our team and would help us raise "tonnes" of money for Children's Miracle Network and The Hospital for Sick Children. All in all, it took nearly 100 people over a year to plan for this record attempt, and we couldn't be happier with the result," said Denise Hutton, Vice President of Marketing at Dairy Queen Canada.

"We've been working around the clock to get the cake finished and now to see so many people enjoying a Dairy Queen treat on a gorgeous spring day while supporting our favourite charity, the work has all been worth it," said Peter White, Executive Vice President of Operations at Dairy Queen Canada.

Sufyan Shaikh, the master swimmer from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, has set the Limca Book of the bathing spot for nine of the sea around the world.

"Limca Book of Records has been confirmed by a certificate that I have been involved in India as the first person to swim in nine different oceans around the world", 18, Shaikh said.

"Speaking of nine of the sea must be a question in your mind as you swim in this self-made. No place to swim around in international competitions, which are arranged in a special event at sea."

"And if there are competitions in the sea, in this case there are some associations that organize the crossing of the sea, taking the price for it. For example, the CS & PF to swim the English Channel, he said.

"I took seven races and two borders around the world in different sea areas. I sent my certificates of Limca Book of Records, after which they controlled, and my name on the bill of lading," he said.

Smallest Inventor set Limca Book Records and India Book of Records Pune

Pune's Viraj Gapchoop has etched his name in the Limca Book of Records 2011 and the India Book of Records 2011. The 12-year-old collected Rs 1.5 lakh in donations in three months for his school through the sale of his invention, 'Viraj's semi-automatic water pump controller'.

The student of Jnana Prabodhini Navnagar Vidyalaya in Nigdi shot into the limelight in February last year when his film on saving water was screened at the Vasundhara International Film Festival in Pune. The movie epitomised the young lad taking a bath in a plastic tub and using the collected water to water plants, flush toilets and floor cleaning.

He made the 12-minute film at home with a handy cam and used his personal computer to edit and add audio. Narrated by him in a simple manner, he spread the message of water conservation by avoiding jargon. Viraj also invented a gadget that helps reduce overflow from overhead water tanks. It can be made from scrap almost for free by anyone who is willing to implement the concept. His invention, with its striking simplicity and cost effectiveness, found many takers.

Instead of selling the device, the teenager collected voluntary contributions from people willing to implement the system and the proceeds were given to his school that needed funds for social and construction activity. What he developed as a science project for school is now also under the process for registration under the Intellectual Property Rights Act, 2008.

Viraj said, "My wish is to save the environment. My question to my mates and parents is, 'If you (parents) in your childhood enjoyed all the joys of pure drinking water, big playgrounds and clean air then why are we being deprived of it?'."
Proud father and architect Dinesh Gapchoop said, "It's always a good feeling when parents are identified because of children. It's great when people say 'Viraj's parents' rather than 'Dinesh's son'!"

Memorise Most of Number of Mobile Number World Record

An 18-year-old girl has set her sights on the Limca Book of Records after training her mind to recollect hundreds of mobile numbers.

Akshatha Swaroopa told Bangalore Mirror, “It takes about 10 seconds to grasp a number. I register these numbers in my mind forever. In a span of 3-4 hours, I can memorise as many as 200 numbers. I was able to develop this technique because of the resource group ‘Swaroopa’ headed by multifaceted teacher, sculptor and artiste Gopadkar.”

The Swaroopa Adhyana Kendra is a non-formal education centre located in Mangalore.

Gopadkar, founder of this institute, said, “Akshatha is just one among the several talents that we have developed in an attempt to bring in a revolution in the education system.”

Gopadkar is known for adopting children, especially from slums. and training them. Akshatha, daughter of Sidappa, a coolie, and Harinakshi, a housewife, has been associated with his group for the past three years. “She not only has a very good memory but is a talented singer, whose CD on learning music along with studies will be released soon,” Gopadkar said.

Akshatha had studied in a government school till Std X. She appeared for the PUC exam (arts) privately this year. She secured 62 per cent.

Gopadkar said, “After we introduced her to our study technique, she was able to score these marks by studying for just two days before each exam. We have developed a technique through which students can complete studying for the SSLC exams in a month’s time. This was demonstrated in a recently concluded camp in which 110 children participated. The method involves enjoying learning, not simply mugging up.”

In the next academic year, about 50 high school children who have quit regular school will be trained by 30 teachers.
Every student attaches ‘Swaroopa’, which means strength, to his or her name. The institute has given the world several wonderkids including Jatin Swaroop who can narrate the medicinal value of 150 herbs.

Gopadkar along with his wife Sumadkar, also a teacher, are working on several techniques and want to popularise their method of learning across the state.

Their five-year-old daughter, Adi Swaroop, has already mastered 70 out of the 450 songs that are part of the SSLC model.

Memory Technique:
Akshatha is enrolled in the Swaroopa Adhyana Kendra, which is a non-formal education centre located in Mangalore. Founder Gopadkar said that their technique is based on hypno-therapy. It allows a student to complete studies in a very short span. For instance, one can complete studying a language paper, including three revisions, in one day and answer the exam the next day.

Most People Singing National Anthem in Pakistan Set World Record

Pakistan achieved the world record for most people singing a national anthem simultaneously late Saturday night when 5,857 Pakistanis chanted the national anthem here at the Defence Stadium in connection with the Independence Day celebrations. The most noteworthy part of the achievement was that the event was arranged by two jingoistic youngsters, Abid Beli and Waqas Pai with a vigorous campaign on social and digital media without any sponsorship or support from the public or private sector. People along with their families and friends started gathering at the designated venue at about 10pm. Rangers, police and scout personnel surrounded the stadium, while volunteers organised the traffic and guided people.

The excited crowd chanted slogans as they filled the ground. Youngsters with face paint and wristbands of national colours kept waving the Pakistani flag. Distinguished in the parade of national flags, was a 40-metre national flag held by youngsters. Renowned television host, entrepreneur and intellectualist Faisal Qureshi was hosting the event. Addressing the participants of the ceremony Beli the main organiser congratulated the people for breaking the world record of most people singing the national anthem. Later while talking to Daily Times he said that the idea was put forth by his associate Pai. He said that the objective behind organising the event was to motivate Pakistani youth to play their due role in the betterment of society. He was of the view that the bomb blasts across the country including the attack on General Headquarter (GHQ) and Abbottabad operation were the events that compelled the youth to gather up and do something for their country.

Beli further said that earlier, India held the record for most people singing the national anthem but he said, it was a flaw as the Indians had sung ‘Vande Mataram’, which is not their national anthem. He further said that they wrote to the concerned authorities in this regard and in response the title was repealed and awarded to Philippines, where 5,248 students, staff, faculty and alumni of MSU-IIT sang ‘Lupang Hinirang’ Philippines’ national anthem on Sept 1, 2009. To a question he said that the behaviour of federal and provincial government was regrettable, as they did not permit the event to be organised at Ibn-e-Qasim Park on the pretext of security concerns. He said that political parties are provided with the permission of taking out rallies and large public meetings, but the government did not support citizens for a noble cause. Pai said not to him but for the entire nation it was a great achievement particularly when the country is facing deteriorating situation. He applauded the fervour of people, who gathered despite of rains, strike and other hurdles.

He said that the cost of the event was about Rs 0.7 million which was contributed by the organisers and their friends. Only a minor sponsorship was offered at the eleventh hour, he added. He also appreciated the role of Defence Housing Authority, who provided them the venue without any cost. “Now we are planning to improve the record in upcoming years, beside forming other records. In this regard we would announce soon another event on Quaid-e-Azam day,” a fervent Pai said. Renowned politician Marvi Memon was also present on the occasion. She said that in 1947 Muslims of the sub-continent had earned their freedom and now they are free but yet to gain the real liberty. She appealed the masses to unite for the betterment and progress of the country.

Captain Wasi, who was freed along with his ship crew after months-long captivity by the Somali pirates, was present on the occasion along with his daughter Laila Wasi. Addressing the ceremony, he said that disasters and tragedies have always encouraged nations, particularly Muslims to unite. In 1940s miseries of the Muslims of sub-continent encouraged them to fight for their freedom. Today, we are facing a number of problems again and the nation will unite soon as this is an opportunity to shun the differences, he added. Laila Wasi, a student of grade 6, while talking to Daily Times said that she wanted to see the metropolis becoming the city of peace. She appealed the entire nation to stand united. In the end, thousands of people sang the national anthem, breaking the previous records. Now the tickets’ record, photos and video evidences will be sent to the World Record authorities as a formality for awarding the record to Pakistan.

Event workers dismantled the barricades along the finish line and took down sponsor banners even as Singh made his way up the final few hundred yards of the race.

Family, friends and supporters greeted Singh when he finished the race.

Sharjah Cricket Stadium - World Record

The Guinness Book of Records acknowledged the achievement of Sharjah cricket stadium for hosting the most number of one-day matches during the Pakistan and Sri Lanka encounter here on Sunday.

Sharjah stadium, built in the early 1980s, was the hub of one-day cricket between 1984 to 2003 and had hosted 200 one-day internationals -- a world record for a limited over matches venue.

The Pakistan-Sri Lanka match on Sunday is the 201st at the stadium.

Official of the Guinness Records Book Vin Sharma presented a certificate to United Arab Emirates (UAE) minister for higher education and scientific research Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan at the stadium.

Sheikh Nahyan said the achievement made UAE proud.

"This is an achievement for Sharjah stadium to get an entry into the world record book," said Sheikh Nahyan, also the chairman of Emirates Cricket Board. "This is something which we are proud of."

Sheikh Nahyan said the Guinness Book entry will encourage UAE to host more and more sport.

"This will encourage us for more support to sports and cricket is gaining momentum and UAE is becoming a base for cricket," said Sheikh Nahyan.

The Gulf state hold major tennis, golf and Formula One Grand Prix every year besides being a neutral venue for Pakistan who are forced to move their home matches because of security fears since 2008.

Arch rivals Pakistan and India played at Sharjah regularly until New Delhi refused to give permission to their national team to play at the neutral venue in 2000.

Sharjah Cricket Council secretary Mazhar Khan hopes the recognition of the Guinness Book of Records will help Sharjah to stage more cricket.

"It is a great achievement and we promise to provide the venue for more and more international cricket," said Khan.
